Solar Benefits in South Carolina
Solar Rebates & Incentives
Solar Rebates & Incentives
Previously known as the Iodine State, South Carolina offers rebates and incentives that can add to your solar savings. Here’s why going solar is a smart financial solution for your home and wallet:
South Carolina Solar Energy Tax Credit
Thanks to the state’s tax credit for solar energy, you can cut the cost of installing your solar panel system by a quarter. South Carolina homeowners can claim 25% of their solar costs as a tax credit. Plus, if you don’t pay enough taxes to get the full credit in the first year, it carries over for up to 10 years!
Utility Solar Power Incentives
Depending on which utility company you have, you can potentially get an additional rebate to cover your solar panel system cost. Or you can earn payments for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of generated electricity from your solar panels:
- Duke Energy Progress customers can get a $1 rebate for every watt (W) of solar power installed on their home and/or business. Example: for a 6-kilowatt (kW) system, it’s an extra $6,000 to help cover your solar costs.
- Sante Cooper customers are eligible for a rebate of $1.30/W of solar energy installed on their roofs (up to $5,200).
Net Metering in South Carolina
Before going solar, it’s important to research and understand net metering. Similar to many states, South Carolina’s net metering policy allows homeowners to “bank” the extra electricity produced by their home’s solar panels. When you need more power than your home is generating (on cloudy days or during the winter months, for example), you can utilize those credits to make up the difference.
Here are the top utility metering programs available in the Palmetto State:
Federal Solar Tax Credit
The Investment Tax Credit (ITC) can reduce your photovoltaic (PV) solar system cost by 26%. The ITC only applies to those who purchase their PV system with cash or a solar loan. You must also have enough income for the tax credit to be meaningful.
